Why We Built a Free DC Maturity Score

Every operator we know answers the same question this time of year: are we ready for peak? And almost every one of them answers it the same way — experience and instinct. You walk the building, you look at the staffing plan, you check the backlog, and you make a judgment call. Forty years in, that instinct is usually pretty good. But instinct doesn't transfer. You can't hand it to your leadership team, you can't put it on a page for your CEO, and you can't compare it to where the building stood six months ago.

That's the gap the DC Maturity Score was built to close. It's a free warehouse and distribution center maturity assessment — twelve questions, about five minutes — that turns the walk-the-building judgment call into a number you can act on. It scores your operation across eleven functional areas, from strategy and governance through inbound, inventory, picking, packing and shipping, labor, technology, and data — and it ends where the season demands: peak season readiness.

We built it from the same maturity framework our partners use inside real client engagements. Each area is graded on a five-level model — Ad Hoc, Basic, Defined, Optimized, Autonomous. The framework isn't theoretical. It comes from more than 130 combined years running distribution centers and warehouse operations, and it reflects what actually separates buildings that hold up under peak volume from buildings that don't. The difference is rarely the conveyor or the WMS. It's whether the discipline underneath — the labor planning, the inventory accuracy, the daily management rhythm — is defined and repeatable, or living in a few people's heads.

We also made a decision that runs against the grain of most industry assessments: your score shows up on screen, immediately, ungated. No form before you can see the number, no required sales conversation. We did that because we've all been on the other side of the gated "free assessment" that turns out to be a lead form with homework attached. If the tool is useful, it should be useful before we ever know your name.

What the Score won't do is fix anything. It's a snapshot, not a solution — twelve questions can tell you where to look, not what to change. The fix is the harder conversation about why an area scored where it did, and that conversation is where we do our real work. But the honest starting point matters. Peak season has a way of grading every building whether the leadership team asked for a grade or not. Better to see the number in July than to learn it in November.
